How can I use virtual events for issue advocacy?

A guide on virtual issue advocacy events

Updated over a week ago

Calls to Congress or state legislators:

  1. Find an issue + write a guide: You can find existing issue campaigns and scripts on 5calls.org; or, write your own guide / script for the event on a document (e.g. Google Docs) that has a shareable link.

  2. Create the event: Once you've finished your call script, go to your dashboard and click 'Create a new event' -> 'New virtual action'

  3. Add your script to the event: When your supporters click the event's action button, make sure it links to either the relevant 5calls.org page or the shareable document you created from Step 1 so they have directions to get started. Add your link to the box below when creating your event.

That's it! Now your supporters can call legislators and advocate at any time.

Webinars, rallies and other remote online meetings

  1. Set up a video conference: Give your supporters the option to join any town hall, meeting, Q&A or house party remotely via video conference. Services like Google Hangout or Facebook Live allow you to schedule conferences or broadcasts ahead of time.

  2. Create the event: Go to your dashboard and click 'Create a new event' -> 'New shifted virtual action'. Enter the details and time of your event.

  3. Add your web conference link:  Copy the link to the webinar from Step 1 into the private details of your event. When your supporters sign up, they'll receive confirmation and reminder emails with this link so they can join the event.

That's it! Now your supporters can join any of your meetings, wherever they are.

Letter writing to legislators

  1. Write a guide. Your supporters can text into ResistBot to easily email their congressional representative or senator. We've written a step by step guide that you can copy for your volunteers; or, write your own instructions on a document with a shareable link.

  2. Create the event: Once you've finished your guide, go to your dashboard and click 'Create a new event' -> 'New virtual action'

  3. Add your guide to the event: When your supporters click the event's action button, make sure it takes them to your guide from Step 1 so they have directions to get started. Add your link to the box below when creating your event.

That's it! Now your supporters can write to their legislators at any time.
